Time Magazine Covers Up Obama's Infanticide Lie |

Time Magazine reporter Michael Scherer cranked out a doozy of an apology for Barack Obama's support of infanticide with a healthy dose of smear against John McCain and Sarah Palin today. His article attempts to piece together Obama's record on the Born Alive Infant Protection Act, which has been largely obfuscated by Obama's own staff who have repeatedly distorted his position on the legislation.
For Townhall Magazine I wrote a lengthy piece describing Obama's out and out lies about his support of BAIPA. It is available for the first time on Townhall.com HERE. My piece details how recently discovered documents from the Illinois state archives prove Barack Obama has lied about his opposition as an Illinois state senator to legislation requiring health officials to provide care to babies who survived abortion. Obama has repeatedly claimed he would have voted for Illinois' version of the BAIPA had it included language to protect abortion rights guaranteed by Roe v. Wade, as the federal version of the bill did, which sailed through the U.S. Senate 98-0. Contrary to what Obama has said, forgotten records from the Illinois Senate archives show Obama did vote against a BAIPA bill that included such a neutrality clause virtually identical to the federal bill. In Scherer's piece, titled "How Valid is Palin's Abortion Attack on Obama," Scherer says "without any clear context" Palin has "seemed to suggest that Obama supported a form of infanticide" by using words "carefully chosen for maximum effect, without employing any outright falsehoods" on the campaign trail and in a radio interview with Laura Ingraham. In reality, Palin was quite explicit when she discussed Obama's record in Johnstown, Pennsylvania last week. She said:
Senator Obama has voted against bills to end partial-birth abortion. In the Illinois Senate, a bipartisan majority passed legislation against that practice. Senator Obama opposed that bill. He voted against it in committee, and voted 'present' on the Senate floor…Most troubling, as a state senator, Barack Obama wouldn't even stand up for the rights of infants born alive during an abortion. These infants – often babies with special needs – are simply left to die….In 2002, Congress unanimously passed a federal law to require medical care for those babies who survive an abortion. They're living, breathing babies, but Senator Obama describes them as "pre-viable." This merciful law was called the Born Alive Infants Protection Act. Illinois had a version of the same law. Obama voted against it." All of Palin's statements are accurate. On the Ingraham program Palin specifically attacked Obama for these votes adding, "I think if more Americans could understand how absolutely extreme that position is there would be a heckuva lot more outrage than we've already seen." Scherer, however, believes Palin is deliberately distorting Obama's record and makes the same charge, using even the same words, against McCain. Oddly enough, in the very next sentence Scherer admits the charges are true.
"Like Palin's statements last week, McCain's radio address was carefully written to avoid outright falsehoods, while effectively misleading voters about the background of Obama's votes," Scherer writes. "It is true that Obama voted against a state bill that had language similar to a federal law." It's very odd to me Scherer concludes McCain and Palin are the ones "misleading" voters about Obama's record on abortion. If anything, Obama's the one who has clearly misled voters, which is why I titled my piece "Obama's Infanticide Lie." Unlike the title of his piece, mine didn't end in a question mark.

"Obama’s Cluelessness in Our Time of Surprises" by Clark Judge |

The Monday morning guest column from Clark Judge:
Obama’s Cluelessness in Our Time of Surprises By Clark S. Judge With the MSM turning a blind eye to his every policy gaffe, Barack Obama has made more than his share of commitments that – if he acts on them – could shatter a fragile economy and undermine US security. From raising taxes on entrepreneurs (in an economy in which entrepreneurship is among the few remaining drivers of growth) to retreat from victory in Iraq (an act that would make the success of Obama's pledge to then seek in Afghanistan all but impossible to achieve), one clueless commitment has followed another all year. But the worst may turn out to be one most Americans have all but ignored – his vow to renegotiate NAFTA.

Palin: Obama ‘Atrocious’ on Abortion |

GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin described her rival Barack Obama’s radical position on abortion as “absolutely atrocious” on Laura Ingraham’s radio program Thursday. Palin specifically attacked Obama for his votes against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act as an Illinois State Senator. “His position on this and on life has been his vote against legislation--three times voting against legislation that would provide medical care to a baby born having been a survivor of an abortion,” she said. “It's very appalling and I think if more Americans could understand how absolutely extreme that position is there would be a heckuva lot more outrage than we've already seen.” Palin went on: “It's appalling enough I think even for those who are pro-abortion to understand that Barack Obama opposes banning partial-birth abortion because that's quite extreme. But for him to have had an opportunity to vote to allow a child born as a result of a botched abortion to receive the medical care that he or she deserves, born with that inalienable right to life. And yet he has sided on the wrong side three times, voting against legislation that would provide that medical care to the baby, is the extreme position on abortion, Americans need to know that.”

"That Kind of Shuts You Up, Doesn't It?" |

I have finally gotten around to reading "When Michelle Met Barack," a glowing little piece in The Washington Post. Obviously intended as a puff piece, it nevertheless offers some insight into the personalities of the people who are obviously hoping to be our next President and First Lady.
First, about Barack:
Near the end of the piece, its author discusses the conflict the Obamas had over whether to get married. Michelle hoped to get married; Barack "put her off, arguing that marriage was a meaningless institution and that the only thing that mattered was how they felt about each other." Apparently, one night at a fancy Chicago restaurant, Barack "went into his usual tirade against marriage, a dissertation that went on until they ordered dessert."
At that point, he took out a box with a ring, and said to his wife, "This kind of shuts you up, doesn't it?"
Don't get me wrong. That kind of talk doesn't disqualify someone from being President. But it sure isn't the honeyed speech we've all grown to know and love in recent months, is it? Barack's outspoken antipathy to marriage sounds like it's been infused with "anti-institutional," radical ideology, more than reflecting a frequent male hesitation about commitment, doesn't it? Is this how he talks and feels when he's off-camera?
Second, about Michelle
I have worked as an associate in a big law firm, and the work can be tedious and the hours, long. Michelle Obama's reaction to those facts of life strike me as bizarre. She was, apparently, recruited by the glitziest, most interesting department at the big, prestigious law firm Sidley Austin, but even that wasn't enough. According to the piece:
Quincy White, the partner who helped recruit Michelle and who headed the marketing group, remembers finding her a challenge to manage. White, who is now retired from the firm, says he gave her the most interesting work he could find, in part because he wanted to see her advance, but also because she seemed perennially dissatisfied. . . .
[The work was] [t]oo monotonous for Michelle, who, White says, complained that the work he gave her was unsatisfactory. He says he gave her the Coors beer ads, which he considered one of the more glamorous assignments they had. Even then, he says, "she at one point went over my head and complained [to human resources] that I wasn't giving her enough interesting stuff . . ."
For anyone who hasn't worked as a law firm associate, it's hard to overstate just how outrageously aggressive such a move is. To complain about a partner, one who heads a department, no less -- to try to cause him a problem -- because your work isn't "interesting" enough? Are you kidding?
Wow. What a piece of work. Good luck to Mrs. Obama's staff . . . that's gotta be a hardship post.

A Word to Catholic Democrats |

The prefect of the Vatican’s Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature -- the Vatican's highest court -- has said that the Democrat Party risks "transforming itself definitively into a party of death. . ." because of its stance on abortion and bioethical issues.
I've heard some on the left dismiss such comments in the past because they're from Vatican denizens who seem to have little familiarity with modern American life. But this one comes from the former Archbishop Raymond Burke of St. Louis, himself an American.
It's hard to figure out how Catholics can ignore such warnings and still remain Catholics in good standing, isn't it?

Choices range from left (People for the American Way, Children's Defense Fund e.g.) to some of my favorites, including the Salvation Army, Soldiers' Angels, and Critter Connection.
Check it out.
Update: Jim Geraghty's already on it over at NRO (and has put in a good word for Soldier's Angels).

Barack ISO Rape Victim |
|

Apparently, Barack Obama's campaign went in search of a rape victim to appear in a campaign ad. Classy. One presumes the ad would have focused on abortion rights, and how rape victims are counting on Democrats like Barack's to preserve their "choice." But note, first, that John McCain has included rape as an exception to his overall pro-life stance (and this simple fact makes him much more centrist in his abortion views than Barack is in his).
Second, even as the Obama campaign seeks a rape victim to exploit in an ad, keep in mind that all the infants who were aborted, in accordance with Barack's extreme pro-choice views, aren't available for comment.
Because they're dead.

Obama Attacks Abortion Survivor |
|
Posted by:

3:19 PM |
With this ad, Gianna Jessen launched a broadside against Barack Obama's repeated opposition to the Born Alive Infant Protection Act in Illinois (my column laying out the whole sordid history is here). It's not surprising she'd object to his stance -- Jessen herself is the survivor of a botched abortion attempt.
Barack's ad attacking Jessen (and inaccurately blaming John McCain for the ad) is here. He argues that his votes against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act are being "taken out of context."
But here's the tip of the iceberg, quick and easy: After the US Senate passed a bill protecting babies born alive as a result of botched abortions -- with even people like Barbara Boxer and Teddy Kennedy voting in support -- the same bill went back to Barack's committee in the Illinois Senate. He voted against it.
The wording was identical. Here's the side-by-side comparison of the federal and Illinois bills. See for yourself.
And then decide whether Barack's attacks on abortion survivor Gianna Jessen have merit.

What Would We Do Without Polls? |

Another Dumb, Useless Poll:
If this election were about which candidate people wanted as their child's schoolteacher, Barack Obama would be moving to the head of the class. They'd also rather watch a football game with him, but only by inches.
People picked the Democrat over Republican John McCain to catch a game with by 50 percent to 47 percent, according to an Associated Press-Yahoo News poll released Friday. Asked which they'd choose to be their child's teacher, Obama was the choice by a more decisive 55 percent to 44 percent, including a markedly stronger performance by the Illinois senator among whites.
